Wheatland-Chili High School Students Participate in a Student Summit on Race

Thirteen Wheatland-Chili High School students joined more than 500 students from 35 area high schools for the eighth Roc2Change Student Summit on Race held at the Joseph A. Floreano Rochester Riverside Convention Center on March 29. The Summit on Race encourages dialogue about race through speakers, student-led activities and sessions. Each summit also includes time for students to collaborate on how to bring the Roc2Change progress and plans back to their respective schools and communities. Co-hosted by Spencerport High School, World of Inquiry School #58, and School of the Arts, the spring 2019 summit focused on the theme, Decoding and Dismantling Structural Racism. Students gained a shared understanding of the term, structural racism; how it differs from interpersonal racism; and how structural racism plays out, locally, and nationally, in the following four areas: Economics and Employment; Health and Housing; Education; and Law Enforcement. Staff members Karen Lee Wilson and Lois Hagadorn attended the spring Summit on Race with the Wheatland-Chili High School students. Mrs. Wilson and our students have participated in the twice-yearly Summit on Race for the past three years.
